INSANE
Projects open to the public
Created in 2016 with 50 residents of the Caen region, INSANE is a choreographic work that is now performed by numerous groups of people living in Lithuania, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and beyond.
Through a training protocol and toolkit-sharing process, Alban Richard supports European choreographers in working with residents of their own countries, drawing on the structure of INSANE to create a locally rooted version each time.
Between 2023 and 2026, the piece has been restaged 10 times in Lithuania, once in the United Kingdom, and once in the Czech Republic.
INSANE is a dance project situated in specific locations. It is the invasion of a space by a community of bodies without identity, without gender, without cultural or religious markers — a community that simultaneously inhabits and haunts that space.
The piece is structured in three sections:
- A community of people wanders and constructs human architectures.
- Small groups of individuals embody scenes from the Last Judgement in an endless procession.
- A dance ritual emerges from a collective energy and spills into the audience’s own space, culminating in a joyful celebration.
