Vivace

Lively!

It starts with a Madis­on, a play­ful, upbeat little line dance, the star of the dance­floors. But Vivace has plenty sur­prises in store for us: to a back­ground of high-tempo pop, baroque and elec­tro, the cho­reo­graphy blos­soms into an aston­ish­ing jour­ney through music and ges­ture. It should be noted that on a music­al score vivace indic­ates a rap­id beat (the equi­val­ent of “lively”). The same word is used in French to describe per­en­ni­als, those plants for whom sur­viv­al is a con­stant strategy… Absorbed by pulsing rhythms, the dan­cers become lively bod­ies of a new kind, all vital­ity, determ­in­a­tion, and persistence.

    “It’s one of the ven­ues well worth check­ing out in the Fringe Fest­iv­al: La Par­enthèse, loc­ated on rue des Etudes. This is where La Belle Scène Saint-Denis has taken up res­id­ence with a highly anti­cip­ated pro­gramme. The morn­ing is reserved for dance, the after­noon for theatre. A genu­ine show­case for its pro­grammed artists, La Belle Scène Saint-Denis is a staunch sup­port­er of new productions.
    The first cycle of the dance pro­gramme, run­ning until 15 July, opens with Vivace, the new pro­duc­tion by Alban Richard, artist­ic dir­ect­or of the CCN de Caen. 35 minutes dur­ing which music will make the per­formers’ bod­ies fluc­tu­ate between 132 and 170 BPM. Anthony Bar­reri and Yan­nick Hug­ron, the per­formers of this duet, seem to have come straight from a nightclub with their club­ber out­fits. That’s what Vivace is about, put­ting rhythm at the centre of the pro­duc­tion. Can one per­form the same move­ments to clas­sic­al music, pop music or hard­core techno?
    The two dan­cers lend them­selves to the choreographer’s game. While the idea is simple on paper, the cho­reo­graph­ic can­vas reveals the dif­fi­culty posed by this score of move­ments. Each part of the body expresses itself: the hand, arm, head, chest, legs and pel­vis. One action fol­lows the oth­er at a steady pace. The music inter­acts with the danced ges­ture, pro­du­cing delight­ful moments. The cho­reo­graph­ic demon­stra­tion is a genu­ine suc­cess. We leave the show feel­ing light but also itch­ing to dance and to move.
    With Vivace, Alban Richard has cre­ated a piece that will let the widest pos­sible audi­ence dis­cov­er dance simply, free of preconceptions.”

    “120 beats per minute! Allegro, non troppo!
    On white car­pet, in shorts and leg­gings, two dan­cers execute a repet­it­ive front­al duet to a music­al selec­tion ran­ging from Bach to disco: in mul­tiple vari­ations of legs, in uni­son, with dead­pan humour, Anthony Bar­reri and Yan­nick Hug­ron per­form a pleas­ant and hil­ari­ous, brightly col­oured ritu­al. Baroque and angu­lar, tak­ing inspir­a­tion from robot­ic squares and fash­ion shows, little by little they whip them­selves into a frenzy, in isol­a­tion, to this patch­work and dis­or­i­ent­ing music­al soundtrack.
    Seg­men­ted, bin­ary, explor­ing infin­ite rhythms, the rack­et they cre­ate gets hearts and pulses beat­ing joy­fully and enthu­si­ast­ic­ally. Pound­ing the ground, lurch­ing in front of us, their zip-line foot­work is full of invent­ive­ness, annoy­ing but in a good way. The audi­ence gets caught up in the rhythm, in osmos­is and full empathy with our two lively and amus­ing mara­thon run­ners whose cor­por­eal mech­an­ics has them fly­ing in all dir­ec­tions in a spring-loaded race against the clock!”

    “Vivace, c’est un mag­ni­fique spec­tacle choré­graph­ique, avec de la grâce, de la poésie, et une cer­taine belle com­pli­cité fusion­nelle, entre les deux dan­seurs, Anthony Bar­ri­eri et Yan­nick Hug­ron. Leurs danses, leurs pas, leurs gestes, ont été un beau voy­age à tra­vers les styles, les époques musicales, du madis­on à l’électro, en passant par le classique. Sur des rythmes différents mais intenses, les corps épousent la musique, font corps avec elle. Une belle alchi­mie s’est créée entre eux deux, où leurs corps mettaient en scène des expres­sions. Ce fut un beau tableau chorégraphique.

    Anthony et Yan­nick, qui trav­ail­lent aus­si pour d’autres com­pag­nies, ont été réunis sur ce pro­jet, par Alban Richard, avec qui ils avaient déjà trav­aillé. Pour ce spec­tacle, écrit et ima­giné par le choré­graphe, dir­ec­teur du centre choré­graph­ique de Caen, le duo a trav­aillé sur des gestes, tels ceux d’arbitres, pour leurs danses. L’objectif était de ne jamais lais­s­er tomber les pulsa­tions, qui oscil­laient entre 132 et 170 batte­ments par minute. Anthony et Yan­nick ont beau­c­oup trav­aillé les per­son­nages, à l’instar d’une pièce théâtrale mimée. La danse, comme la musique, est une forme d’expression artistique, où le spectateur peut l’interpréter suivant diverses possibilités.”

    “La sais­on cul­turelle se ter­mine déjà pour le THV avec deux représent­a­tions du spec­tacle d’Alban Richard du
    Centre choré­graph­ique nation­al de Caen. Vendredi 28 mai, ce sont les élèves et per­son­nels de l’Établissement
    région­al d’enseignement adapté Les Terres rouges qui en ont profité les premi­ers. Stéphane Ser­ru, le
    pro­viseur avait souhaité repro­gram­mer le spec­tacle prévu pour la fête de l’établissement l’an derni­er, annulé
    en rais­on de la crise.

    Sortir des stéréotypes
    L’objectif étant d’ouvrir les élèves à la cul­ture et à des situ­ations sans stéréo­types. « La danse est un art et
    un art, ça n’a pas de sexe, Messieurs » a‑t-il lâché à des jeunes qui portent par­fois un regard sex­iste sur cet
    art.? La demi-heure de spec­tacle ultra-ryth­mé a sans doute fait évolu­er les men­tal­ités.? Intit­ulé « Vivace » la
    per­form­ance porte bien son nom. Le duo évolue sur une bande son­ore au tempo entre 132 et 170 battements
    par minute, de la petite musique de chambre à l’électro la plus débridée.”
